Thyroid Surgery

Wednesday, April 29, 2009
posted by admin @ 2:29 PM

Reason: A thyroidectomy may be necessary if you have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer or you have a nodule that is larger than 1cm and it is growing. Your primary care physician and Dr. Harrison can help you decide when thyroid surgery may be necessary.

Preparation: The day before your surgery, you will be asked not to eat after midnight.

Thyroid Surgery Procedure: The operation is performed through a small collar incision in your neck. The sutures dissolve over time, and the scar should eventually fade.

Parathyroid Surgery

posted by admin @ 2:27 PM

Reason: The parathyroid is comprised of four small glands, usually located directly behind the thyroid in the lower neck. Hyperparathyroidism occurs when one or more parathyroid glands releases too much parathyroid hormone without regard to the already high levels of calcium within your blood stream. Hyperparathyroidism can result in osteoporosis, depression, fatigue and constipation.

Preparation: The day before your surgery, you will be asked not to eat after midnight.

Parathyroid Surgery Procedure: The operation is performed through a small collar incision in your neck. The sutures dissolve over time and the scar should eventually fade.

Hernia Repair

Wednesday, April 29, 2009
posted by admin @ 2:26 PM

Reason: An abdominal hernia occurs when the stomach muscles are weakened and organs start to bulge through the abdominal wall. Abdominal hernias can occur at the site of a previous surgical incision (incisional hernia), behind the bellybutton (umbilical hernia), in the groin area (inguinal hernia), or the upper portion of the stomach (hiatal hernia).

Hernias will not heal on their own, and they can only be repaired through surgery. Hernia repair surgery can remove any visible bulge and eliminate the pain caused by your hernia. It can also prevent any serious side effects, such as organ strangulation, which causes blood flow to be cut off from the organ that is trapped within the muscle wall.

Gallbladder Surgery

Wednesday, April 29, 2009
posted by admin @ 2:25 PM

Reason: Your gallbladder is located under your liver in the upper right quadrant of your abdomen. Stones, thickenings of the gallbladder wall, and obstruction of the bile duct are a few reasons that you may have a gallbladder attack. Your primary care physician or Dr. Harrison can determine whether you have a gallbladder infection by using an ultrasound or HIDA scan. Gallbladder surgery can prevent you from having further pain, suffering, and future gallbladder attacks.

Preparation: The day before your surgery, you will be asked not to eat after midnight.

Bowel Surgery

Wednesday, April 29, 2009
posted by admin @ 11:49 AM

Reason: Diverticulitis often presents itself as abdominal pain and can be a surgical emergency. The condition is caused when pouches in the colon—called diverticula—become inflamed. This is usually due to blockage caused by feces or food particles, like popcorn or nuts. Diverticulitis is generally diagnosed by symptoms and can often be confirmed with a CT scan and fixed with Bowel Surgery.

Preparation: If the diverticulitis requires emergency surgery, Dr. Harrison may have to place you with a colostomy pouch until your colon recovers. This procedure often can be reversed in 3-6 months.

Breast Surgery

Wednesday, April 29, 2009
posted by admin @ 11:04 AM

Reason: If your primary care physician or Ob-Gyn detects a lump in your breast, he or she will refer you to Dr. Harrison for a breast biopsy. A breast biopsy is used to detect whether or not a lump is malignant—that is, whether it is cancerous—and early detection has helped save thousands of lives.

Breast Surgery Procedure: The type of breast biopsy performed depends on the size and location of the lump.
